What we do to keep people safe
- If someone types something that suggests they might hurt themselves or someone else, we don't look it up as slang. We show support services instead, and our safety team is alerted so it can decide whether to contact emergency services. We can't reply to messages typed into the decoder, and this site is not a crisis service: if anyone is in danger, call 000.
- Any term about self-harm, eating disorders, sexual exploitation, violence or bullying is shown with support services, following Australia's Mindframe guidelines for safe communication.
- New AI-written definitions with a mature, offensive or vulgar rating, or about a harmful topic, are checked by a person before anyone else can see them.
- Our “Term of the Day” never features offensive, vulgar or harmful terms.
- Suggestions from users are always reviewed by a person before they are published.
How we use AI
Many definitions, translations and classroom discussion prompts are written by AI models. They are labelled “AI-generated” and can contain mistakes, so please check before relying on them. Definitions written and reviewed by our team are labelled as such. We use two automated safety checks: a keyword check (which doesn't use AI) that decides when to show support information, and an AI safety classifier that decides when content is held for a person to review. Neither one makes a final decision to publish. See “Automated decisions and AI” in our Privacy Policy.
Report a problem
Every definition has a “Report this definition” button. You don't need an account, and we don't ask for your contact details. A person reviews every report, usually within 2 business days, and sooner for anything dangerous. To report something else, or illegal content, email safety@wahub.ai. You can also report illegal or harmful online content directly to the eSafety Commissioner, and child sexual exploitation to the ACCCE.
When we record information for safety
If something typed into the decoder suggests someone may be at risk of harm, we keep a secure record of what was typed, the time, the IP address and device details, and the account if one was signed in. We use it only to respond to that risk and, where the law allows or requires, to share it with emergency services or police. It is deleted after 90 days unless it is needed for an investigation. See our Privacy Policy.
For regulators and law enforcement
Requests from the eSafety Commissioner, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, police or other authorities can be sent to safety@wahub.ai. We keep a tamper-evident record of safety decisions so we can show what happened and when.
This is our single point of contact for the eSafety Commissioner, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and, where they apply, authorities under the EU Digital Services Act. We accept communications in English. Please include your agency, a reference number and a contact number we can verify independently.
