Definition

A derogatory term for a person (often a girl, hence 'pick me girl') who claims or acts as if they are 'not like others' (especially others of their own gender) to seek attention, validation, or approval, particularly from the opposite sex. This behavior often involves putting down their own gender or highlighting how they are different and supposedly superior.

The concept has been discussed for years, but the term gained significant traction and became a label through social media discourse, particularly on TikTok, in the early 2020s. It's used to criticize behavior perceived as disingenuous or seeking external validation by denigrating one's peers.

For Parents & Educators

This term is highly critical and often used to shame or bully individuals. While it can sometimes point to behaviors rooted in internalized misogyny or a desire for male validation, it's frequently applied broadly and can discourage individuality or genuine cross-gender friendships. Discussions around it can be very heated.
